TEHRAN(IRNA) -- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here on Sunday that parties are the main pillars of democracy and freedom and due to this reason, Iran's Constitution specifically makes references to number of parties in the country.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani told a group of the members of Iran's House of Parties Central Council that parties and groups are the valuable assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He said the parties, distinguished by Islamic standards as well as their commitment, endurance and popularity, are the backbone of a popular system.

He added that House of Parties should try to find a legal way out of the economic problems facing parties and also make public opinion believe in the need for parties.

He said successful parties can, with public support, contribute to the decision-making process.
