TEHRAN (IRNA) -- Head of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here Sunday that the enemies of the Islamic Revolution spend huge sums during the deposed shah`s regime on the construction of nuclear power plants and believed that they were investing in their second homeland.

Addressing a group of university professors at the confab called `Nuclear Technology and National Strength`, he said that on the threshold of triumph of the Islamic Revolution, they tried to impose tough restrictions by canceling contracts and even preventing the dispatch of purchased parts for the nuclear power plants.

"We are now in a very sensitive situation and should take a crucial decision", he said. Signing or not signing of the additional protocol to NPT will have its consequences, he said adding, "We should make a very precise and brave decision in which the role of qualified management will be highly significant." The country`s officials from the early stages tried to implement nuclear power plants and they never thought of proliferation of nuclear weapons, he said adding, "To remove our demands, we should find access to peaceful application of nuclear technology and no one is allowed to prevent us from achieving this right."

Iranian top officials, under the guidance of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, are now studying the case with meticulous attention, he said.

"No one is authorized to deprive us of this privilege", he said.

Despite of all political differences and tastes, "We should call for consolidation of unity and trust on God to attain success," he concluded.
