UN Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression to Meet MPs
A member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Ala’eddin Borujerdi said on Tuesday that the commission has arranged Ligabo’s visit to Tehran.
The lawmaker told reporters that given the sensitivity of the West to the human rights issue, they normally arrange such visits from time to time.
"Given that Iran’s dossier on the human rights is clear, even in accordance to the Western criteria, Ligabo’s visit will contribute to making the outlook of West on Iran’s compliance with human rights more transparent.
"Apart from some mischievous actions taken in the West due to their special outlook, the visit can be quite positive as far as clarification of the Western approach to Iran is concerned," he concluded.
During his visit (November 4-10), Ligabo is scheduled to meet senior Iranian government officials and magistrates as well as representatives of civil society including members of the media and academics.
According to a press release issued earlier by the UN Information Center in Tehran some time ago, the mandate on promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression was created by the Human Rights Commission in 1993.
