Deference paid to “Buddha” in Montreal

TEHRAN -- Hana Makhmalbaf’s film “Buddha Collapsed out of Shame” has won the Daniel Langlois Innovation Award at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma of Montréal, the 36th edition of which was held October 10-21.
The award is presented to a work which is outstanding as regards to its aesthetic accomplishment, creative use of new technology and innovative approach to a sensitive issue.“Buddha Collapsed out of Shame”, which is a joint production of Iran and France, is about violence in the everyday life of a 6-year-old Afghan girl who lives with her mother amidst the ruins of two giant statues of Buddha that were bombed by the Taliban.
Hana, daughter of the celebrated filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, has recently received the Paolo Ungari UNICEF Award at the Cinema Rome Film Fest for the humanitarian slant of this film which highlights the plight of Afghan children.
In September, “Buddha” won the special jury award at the 55th San Sebastian Film Festival
