Sarkozy’s rating at all-time low

A large majority of the French population feel President Nicolas Sarkozy has done little to improve their lives during his first year in office.

A poll released on Sunday asked whether Sarkozy’s policies had improved the situation in France and for its citizens over the past year.
79% of respondents said no and 21% said yes, according to the IFOP poll published in Le Journal du Dimanche weekly.
The survey also puts Sarkozy’s approval rating at an all-time low of 36%. This is one point lower than in March, when he got the lowest level ever reached by a French president after one year in office.
Sarkozy is set to defend his record in office during a prime-time live interview on French television this Thursday.
One year after he was elected on a platform of sweeping changes, the right-wing president is struggling with a gloomy economic outlook that threatens to dampen his reform drive.
The two rounds of the presidential elections last April and May saw him beat his Socialist challenger Ségolène Royal to take over from Jacques Chirac.
