SARI - Political persuasions should not act as an impediment to the country’s economic development, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said on Friday.

“The politicians should rectify their thoughts, and political tastes should not hinder the country’s development,” Larijani said at a ceremony held for commemorating martyrs of the 7th of Tir (June 28, 1981) in Nour city in northern Mazandaran province.
National unity is the key to development of the country, he stated, adding that unity should be strengthened between people and officials.
“We should strengthen national unity through... collaboration and having consistency in our policies,” he said.
-------5+1 package
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana visited Tehran on June 14 to deliver a revised offer of economic and political incentives from the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China) in exchange for a suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment activities.
Larijani said that the package is primarily aimed at persuading Iran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program.
However the West cannot force Iran to suspend its nuclear program, he added.
Pointing to the importance of modern technologies, he said only countries can exercise influence on the world stage that “will own modern technologies and peaceful nuclear energy.”
As a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has the right to master the complete nuclear fuel cycle, including uranium enrichment, for peaceful purposes.
On Wednesday, Larijani warned the West against “provoking” the Islamic Republic. “If you intend to hold talks with Iran over the package of proposals, why have you taken the path of confrontation before the package is investigated?” he asked the European Union.
The warning came as the 27-nation European Union on Monday agreed new sanctions on Iran. The sanctions include an asset freeze on Iran’s largest state bank, Bank Melli.
