BEIJING -- India celebrated their first individual Olympic gold medal on Monday and American swimmers kept Michael Phelps's dream alive by a finger-tip.
The usually cool Phelps screamed and pumped the air with joy as his U.S. team mates helped maintain his charge for an unprecedented eight golds in the pool, pipping France in the 4x100 meters freestyle relay.Indians banged drums and danced in the streets after the world's second most populous nation won their first individual Olympic title with Abhinav Bindra's gold in the men's 10m air rifle. — Reuters
Nadal, Federer, Serena, Venus all win
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Serena and Venus Williams were all winners Monday at Olympic tennis.
Serena Williams won all four games when her match resumed after Sunday's suspension by rain and she defeated Olgo Govortsova of Belarus, 6-3, 6-1. Nadal also made a successful debut with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Italy's Potito Starace.
Top-seeded Roger Federer had an easier time. He began a bid for his first Olympic medal by beating Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-2, while Venus and Serena Williams also advanced to the second round. — AP
Cuba women's volleyball team defeat U.S.
Cuba's Olympic women's volleyball team defeated the United States in straight sets on Monday.
Cuba, who won three Olympic gold medals in a row in 1992, 1996 and 2000 and were bronze medalists in Athens, crushed the Americans 25-15 in the first set.
The United States, coached by one of China's most popular former athletes, “Jenny” Ping Lang, battled hard in the second set but lost out 26-24 and Cuba took the pool A match in the third.
In pool B, European champions Italy picked up their second straight win with a comfortable three-set victory over Kazakhstan with Francesca Piccinini top scoring with 12 points.
Impressive Serbia had no trouble against Algeria as they won in straight sets and with a points margin of 75-40. — Reuters
South Korea wins men's archery team competition
South Korea has taken the gold medal in the Olympic men's team archery competition, matching the feat of its women a day earlier.
The team of Im Dong-hyun, Lee Chang-hwan and Park Kyung-mo won South Korea's the third consecutive Olympic gold in this event. They defeated Italians Mauro Nespoli, Ilario Di Buo' and Marco Galiazzo by 227 points to 225.
Chinese archers Jiang Lin, Li Wenquan and Xue Hai Feng -- seeded 12th and last after the ranking round -- raised their game throughout the day and defeated Ukraine for the bronze medal, having earlier seen off Russia and Australia. — AP
Chen wins China's 3rd gold in weightlifting
Chen Yanqing has easily defended her Olympic gold medal in the women's 58-kilogram category, winning China's third weightlifting gold medal and breaking two Olympic records.
Maria Shainova of Russia was second and North Korea's O Jong Ae got the bronze.
Chen lifted a total of 244 kilograms (537.9 pounds) Monday, shattering her previous Olympic record from four years ago by 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds).
She lifted 106 kilograms (233.7 pounds) in the snatch and 138 kilograms (304.2 pounds) in the clean jerk -- another Olympic high score. — AP
China divers 2-for-2
China made it 2-for-2 in diving when Lin Yue and Huo Liang won the men's 10-meter synchronized title on Monday.
The Chinese led throughout, winning with a mark of 468.18 points. Germany's duo of Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding rallied for the silver at 450.42, leaving Russia's Gleb Galperin and Dmitry Dobroskok to settle for bronze at 445.26 -- just 0.42 ahead of fourth-place Australia.
David Boudia and Thomas Finchem of the United States were third after the fourth of sixth dives but couldn't hold on. They took fifth in 440.64. — AP
