Solana writes to Iran on resuming nuclear talks

TEHRAN – EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) chief and nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili calling for resuming nuclear talks to clear up the “least remaining” questions about Iran’s nuclear activities.
Solana represents the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia in nuclear talks with Iran.
In the letter which was submitted to Iran’s embassy in Brussels on Thursday, Solana has insisted on his commitment and the 5+1 group to find a “diplomatic solution” to the nuclear row.
Solana has also stated that Iran’s “questions” about the 5+1 nuclear offer are “understandable.”
Solana visited Tehran on June 14 to deliver a revised offer of economic and political incentives from the 5+1 group in exchange for a suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment activities.
In response to the 5+1 proposal, Iran presented its own package of proposals on ways to address international challenges, including the threat of nuclear proliferation.
The letter on Thursday came in response to Jalili’s letter to Solana and 5+1 group on October 6 in which Jalili said the world is seeing that when a “logical question” is asked, the negotiating partners resort to the “use of pressure instead of answering the question.”
An EU official said Solana had mentioned the letter.
“Solana mentioned to EU deputies this week that he had sent a letter to Iran,” the official told Reuters in Brussels. He gave no further details.
