Shakhtar Donetsk v Werder Bremen in UEFA final

Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen of Germany contest the last Uefa Cup final in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Shakhtar hope to become the first Ukrainian side to win a European trophy since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Werder want their first major European honor since the 1992 Cup Winners’ Cup ahead of the tournament’s relaunch as the Uefa Europa League next season.
For Werder, Diego and Hugo Almeida are both suspended but Shakhtar’s Jadson is set to play despite a recent knock.
Thomas Schaap’s Werder Bremen side, who beat arch-rivals Hamburg on away goals in the semi-final, have enjoyed excellent form in cup competitions this season.
They knocked out tournament favorites AC Milan in the last 32 and have reached the German Cup final, where they face Bayer Leverkusen on 30 May.
But Schaap’s side’s league form has been erratic, with five-goal victories over the likes of Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt offset by poor results against the league’s lesser lights.
Bremen striker Markus Rosenberg conceded his side had endured plenty of ups and downs this season.
“It’s been a strange season. We are used to challenging for the Bundesliga title but that did not happen. Instead we did really well in the cups,” he said.
“It has been a really strange season for me too. I started really well and scored quite a few goals. I don’t know what happened.
“I am saving my goals for the Uefa Cup final.”
Shakhtar, last season’s Ukrainian champions, go into the game after thrashing Lugansk 3-0 away from home to clinch second place in this year’s championship behind runaway champions Dynamo Kiev.
That has secured a place in the third qualifying round of next year’s Champions League.
Coach Mirea Lucescu said: “We all will do our best to win the Uefa Cup.
“I believe we have enough power and skill to win the trophy. We just need to prove it on the pitch in Istanbul.”
Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov has been the key to their European success, conceding only five goals in eight Uefa Cup matches this season, although the stopper was keen to give praise to his defense.
“All in all, it’s more thanks to the defenders - my role is as a leader,” he stated.
“The better I can lead the team - the defense, that is - the easier it is for me.”
