VATICAN CITY(AP) – The Vatican said Pope Benedict XVI is marking the fifth anniversary of his election by hosting a lunch with cardinals.

Monday's anniversary is clouded by a clerical sex abuse scandal that has been rocking the Catholic Church for months, causing its gravest crisis of recent times.
On Sunday in Malta Pope Benedict XVI met with sex-abuse victims and told them with tears in his eyes that the Roman Catholic Church would seek justice for pedophile priests and take “effective measures” to protect young people from abuse, the Vatican and victims said.
Benedict expressed his “shame and sorrow” at the pain the men and their families suffered and prayed with them during the meeting at the Vatican Embassy in Malta, the Vatican said.
“He prayed with them and assured them that the Church is doing, and will continue to do, all in its power to investigate allegations, to bring to justice those responsible for abuse and to implement effective measures designed to safeguard young people,” the Vatican said in a statement.
The Vatican did not say what those measures would be. Eight men, in their 30s and 40s, met with Benedict in the chapel of the Vatican Embassy.
