Iran has options if JCPOA is violated: security chief

TEHRAN - Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Tuesday that Iran has “various options” if the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is violated.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump claimed in March that his “number one priority is to dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran”. However, he later backed down from his rhetoric saying it was difficult to violate a deal which has been approved by the UN Security Council.

“BARJAM (the Persian acronym for the JCPOA) is an international commitment and the sides should be faithful to the deal they signed. We are not worried, because the maneuvering power we have in case of any negative act by the other side is definitely deterrent,” Shamkhani said.

The top security official said Iran will remain committed to the nuclear deal’s obligations as long as the signatories to the agreement do not violate the agreement.

Iran and the 5+1 group (the U.S., Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany) finalized the text of the JCPOA in Vienna in July 2015. The nuclear agreement took effect in January 2016.

EU foreign ministers issued a statement on November 14 reiterating the 28-nation bloc’s “resolute” commitment to the implementation of the nuclear agreement.
