TEHRAN Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani last week met some members of Islamic Iran Participation Party (IIPP), including Mohammadreza Khatami. The two sides exchanged views on the present political situation in the country, an informed source said yesterday.
The source said that the two sides criticized each other for certain stands on some issues. Former president Rafsanjani took some radical members of the IIPP to task for their hardline views on some national issues.
However, the IIPP members also criticized Rafsanjani for his saying that "the present situation in Iran is the same as it was during the time of (the first president Abolhassan) Banisadr." In response to their criticism, Rafsanjani promised that he would correct his stance, the source added.
Banisadr was the first president of the Islamic Republic, elected in 1980. But a short while after he took office, he deviated from the path of revolution and joined hands with the terrorist Mojahedin Khalq Organization. Consequently, he was dismissed by the Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini.
