TEHRAN The Palestinian Authority (PA) police have arrested 60 Hamas activists, including a senior leader Dr.
Abdulaziz Rentisi, it was said yesterday.
Hamas representative in Iran Abu Muhammed Mustafa, speaking in an interview with the TEHRAN TIMES, said, "Just before the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, the PA police arrested Dr. Rentisi on the order of Mr. Yasser Arafat." "After the summit, more Hamas activists and leaders were taken into police custody," Mustafa noted.
In response to a question, Mustafa underlined that "the PA is following the orders of the Zionist regime and the United States." The Hamas representative in Iran stressed that the arrests are aimed at crushing the Intifada, or uprising of the Palestinians.
Mustafa said the people in the occupied Palestine are openly demanding the release of those who have been arrested by the PA police.
He added that Arafat has arrested Hamas leaders due to heavy pressure from the Zionist regime and the United States. "Arafat is also forced to comply with the agreements known as the Oslo Accords, which he reached with the Zionist regime in 1993."
