BANDAR ABBAS, Hormozgan Province Commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Abbas Mohtaj, Tuesday termed as "illegitimate and irrational" the presence of foreign forces in the Persian Gulf.
Speaking here on the occasion of the launching of the second stage of "Vahdat-79" wargames, he said that the presence of alien forces has not only disturbed the stability and security of regional states but is a factor inviting tension, conflict and insecurity in the region.
The navy commander further stressed that only through unity, solidarity and convergence of regional countries would lasting peace be assured for the Persian Gulf littoral states.
He said that the combat readiness of all participating forces the grand "Vahdat-79" maneuvers is a manifestation of the capabilities of the Iranian armed forces.
Rear Admiral Mohtaj said that the Islamic Republic's Armed Forces are pivoted on the principles of self-sufficiency and self-reliance.
He said that the Iranian Armed Forces is committed to safeguard the territorial integrity of their Islamic homeland with full might at sea and on land.
However, he further remarked, the forces are friendly and take steps to develop relations with neighboring countries, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to expand relations with those states in all areas.
Rear Admiral Mohtaj said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown that its military might is defensive, i.e., for the defense of the country's independence and territorial integrity, adding that neither its military nor non-military capabilities had ever been used in an aggressive capacity against regional countries and will remain so in the future.
Also Commander of the IRGC Navy, Admiral Morteza Saffari, said the second stage of "Vahdat-79" wargames was launched on the birth anniversary of the third Imam of the household of the holy Prophet Mohammad (S), Imam Hussein (AS) which is celebrated yearly as Pasdar (Guard) Day.
Participant forces left the harbor in full preparedness to achieve predetermined targets in this stage of the 8-day exercises, he further added.
The wargames are staged yearly with 8,000 troops from the army, the IRGC, LEF and Basij participating.
Admiral Saffari said that given the activities of alien fleets, particularly the U.S., in the region, such military maneuvers are of great importance.
"We seek thorough unity and full tranquility and security in the Persian Gulf region so there can be no need for the presence of alien forces in the region," stressed the admiral.
