BARCELONA Barcelona's Dutch international midfielder Philip Cocu has agreed to extend his contract at the club for another two years.
The 30-year-old's existing contract with the Catalan club was due to expire at the end of the June 2001.
"This gives both the club and myself peace of mind. It is clear we want to continue our relationship because we are very happy with how things have gone so far," said the player.
Cocu was brought to Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven in 1998 at the request of then coach Louis van Gaal. He quickly became a fixture in the club's midfield and was a notable exclusion from the criticism leveled at Van Gaal's other Dutch signings.
The recently elected Barcelona President Joan Gaspart has stated that one of his main priorities is to renew the contracts of key players like Cocu.
