Majlis to Set Up Committee to Look Into Security Status Along Eastern Borders

TEHRAN Majlis (Parliament) decided here Sunday to set up a committee to look into the security issues in eastern Iranian borders which are infested with drug trafficking and armed banditry, it said Sunday.
The committee is to be comprised of the members of the Majlis Committee for National Security and Foreign Policy and several MPs representing the border provinces of Khorasan and Sistan-Baluchestan.
Majlis called on the European states to help Iran in fighting drugs.
As the greatest victim of drug fight, Iran has thus far incurred heavy losses, it said.
Iran is a major transit point in the international drug trade, but has contributed a lot to the international struggle against drug trafficking.
Its eastern border with Afghanistan is the hub for drug syndicates and the most problematic in that respect.
In 1999 alone, 740 drug dealers and 174 Iranian police officers were killed in narcotics-related battles throughout Iran, according to government reports.
