Iran's Ambassador to Algeria Named

TEHRAN On the recommendation of Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and approval of President Mohammad Khatami, Seyed Mohammadreza Mavali-Zadeh was appointed as Iran's ambassador to Algeria, it was announced here Monday.
Mavali-Zadeh was an MP representing Ahwaz for two terms and was also a member of Majlis Foreign Policy Commission.
Iran and Algeria severed diplomatic ties in 1993 and withdrew their respective ambassadors.
Following a meeting between President Khatami and Algeria's President Abdelaziz Boutaflika on the sidelines of the Millennium Summit at the United Nations, the two countries agreed to resume diplomatic relations.
Algeria has appointed a diplomat Abdolghader Hajjar as its ambassador to Iran. He is expected to take up his post in Tehran soon.
