Regional Seminar on Sport, Environment Opens in Tehran

TEHRAN Vice President and Head of Physical Education Organization Mostafa Hashemi-Taba said on Saturday the progress in technology would be welcome if it did not target natural resources.
Addressing the regional Seminar on Sport, Environment and Implementation of the Olympic Movement's Agenda 21 sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Hashemi-Taba said that some countries are exploiting the natural resources without observing the standard and this has caused concern among the people throughout the world.
He regretted that industrialists in some countries have not paid heed to the environment standard.
Hashemi-Taba, who is also the chairman of National Olympic Committee (NOC), said that athletes need a healthy environment to pursue sports.
He said that radiation' is the most dangerous pollution in the environment and the countries advocating healthy environment should take measures to remove the threats posed by radiation.
The Iranian vice president emphasized the need to help the athletes promote their spiritual strength in parallel with physical strength.
He welcomed setting up an ethical commission within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and said that the commission would help promote ethical values among the athletes.
