TEHRAN -- President Mohammad Khatami said in reaction to the request of a group of journalists to run for the 8th presidential elections that the key to people's reinstatement in their position is their movement in line with public wishes and demands.

He said what deserves remaining is strong will of a great nation that has passed many events in light of Islam and their lofty culture.

The editorial board of the weekly Ayene Ardakan in a letter addressed to the president had called him to remain in his post (by running for the next presidential elections) so as not to allow fulfillment of any anti-Islamic and anti-religious action.

"Khatami! hold on, and don't allow facts get slaughtered by interests," read the letter.

The journalists further urged the president to insure remaining in his position so as to guarantee fighting against law breakers and advocates of violence and continued confrontation with those abusing national trust.

They called on the president to remain in his position in order to let Islamic unity and national solidarity remain everlasting and firm.

"Hold on so that Iran will continue to be prosperous, exalted, developed and independent by relying on the three principles (of dignity, wisdom and interest)," the letter said.

The journalists said the idea of dialogue among civilizations presented at the UN had promoted Iran's reputation at the global level. They called on the president to run for the next elections so that international dialogue and peace would be attained.
