KUWAIT CITY Kuwait's government is to boost marriage counseling services to counter the growing number of divorces, especially among newly-weds, *** Al-Qabas *** newspaper reported Monday. The Ministry for Islamic Affairs has allotted a new building for marriage counselors to receive troubled married couples to try to help solve their disputes, AFP quoted the paper as saying. The move follows campaigns by several local charities to combat the increasing divorce rate. Officials estimate that a third of all marriages in the conservative Arab emirate, which has an indigenous population of around 840,000, end in divorce. And high wedding costs and dowries have left as many as 40,000 women unmarried as Kuwaiti men often opt to remain bachelors or to marry foreigners.
