Damascus Uncovers 18th-Century Public Bath

DAMASCUS -- Syrian archeologists have uncovered an Ottoman- era public baths in the old city of Damascus, dating it as being constructed in the 18th century, ***Al-Baath***, the newspaper of the Baath ruling party, said Monday. The chief archeologist, Haitham Hassan, said visitors entered through an outer room that consists of a square area surrounded by three large sitting rooms with an octagonal fountain in the middle. The second part, which could be reached through the fountain, contained several chambers for bathing. The third area was a service space for boilers with a set of watercourses underneath the baths which served as a heating system.
