Police Seizes 2,600kg of Narcotics, Arrest 4,963 Traffickers

SHIRAZ -- Police in this southern province have seized 2,600 kilos of narcotics from 4,963 drug-traffickers over the past three months, an official of the province's special Anti-Drug Headquarters, Mohammad-Ali Ghaffari, told reporters here on Tuesday.

Ghaffari said that the amount of drugs confiscated for the period shows a 17.8 percent growth compared to the corresponding figure last year.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Office of the Police Headquarters in Gonabad, Khorasan Province reported that more than 135 kilos of narcotics were also confiscated in a police raid of drug traffickers' hideouts in the region during the same period.

Some 216 people suspected of involvement in activities related to drug smuggling, illegal importation of foreign cigars, photos and CDS were also arrested.

In another development Police in Gilan Province, north Iran, have confiscated over 100 kilograms of drugs in the first three months of the current year (started March 21), head of the Gilan police department announced on Wednesday.

"Some 250 addicts and smugglers were arrested in connection with the confiscation," Commander Reza Zareie told reporters.

He noted the arrested possessed tens of motor cars and motor cycles worth about Rls two billion.
