Minor Temblor Jolts Southwestern Iran

SHAHR-E KORD -- An earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.4 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, shook the city of Shalamzar in the southwetern Iranian province of Chaharmahal-o Bakhtiari early Saturday.

The Seismological Base of Broujen, affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, put the quake at 00:11 hours local time (1941 GMT), 33 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital city of Shahr-e Kord.

The provincial Red Crescent Head Mehran Nourbakhsh told IRNA on Saturday that relief workers have been dispatched to the affected region.

No casualties or property damage has yet been reported.

Iran sits on some of the world's seismic faultlines and is often visited by mild tremors.
