TEHRAN -- Deputy Head of Institute for Standards and Industrial Research of Iran (ISIRI) for Metal Research Mohammad-Ali Akhavan said here Saturday that if the current trend continues, the production of oil will equal its domestic consumption and oil exports will dry up by 2007. Speaking at the second Seminar of Optimizing Energy Use in Household Appliances, he added that over 80 percent of the national revenues are earned from oil exports, and "therefore any stoppage of oil revenues will have grave repercussions on the domestic economy."

He also cited the need for reduction of energy consumption in industrial machinery and home appliances with the aim of mitigating a possible energy crisis. The official said that the world's average oil consumption for producing each U.S.$1,000 of national income is two barrels, "compared to Iran's consumption of seven barrels of oil for producing the same amount of income."

Akhavan further said that Iran ranks among the highest users of energy in the world. The per capita energy consumption in Iran is 16 times that of India, 10 times more than China and three times higher than Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Organization for Optimization of Energy Consumption Mahdi Samadi said here Saturday that based on international prices, Iran spends $40 billion worth of fuel annually.

He added that due to low prices of energy in Iran, the domestic fuel cost in the country's expenditure list is put at $20 billion, while by saving and exporting this amount of energy Iran can earn $40 billion per year.

Speaking at the same seminar, he added that it is estimated that over $600 billion worth of energy will be consumed in the country in the next 20 years.

"By installing more efficient energy equipment, savings in this sector will top $200 billion which is more than the cost of home fuel consumption in the next 20 years," he noted.

Iran Khodro Automobile Company adds about $250 million to the cost of fuel consumed in the country annually, Samadi said, adding the issue has to be properly addressed by enforcing policies aimed at preventing the production and import of high-fuel consum ing vehicles.
