TEHRAN -- Statistics Institute of Asia and Pacific (SIAP) appointed Iran as the Central Asian Regional Statistics Training Center.

Head of Iran's Statistics Research Center, Hamid Reza Navvabpour, told IRNA that suitable training facilities, expert manpower and professors of statistics accounted for Iran's qualification to serve as the regional training center.

"Given that the international scientific organizations find Iran reliable, during the current Iranian year (started March 21) three training courses aimed at promoting statistical sciences on the region are offered in Iran by SIAP," he added.

According to him, a regional training course in taking sample statistic and its application will be held at Iran's Statistics Research Center on December 14-25.

Navvabpour said that the course will be attended by 10 participants from Iran's Statistics Research Center and six others from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

"Since the establishment of Iran's Statistics Research center in 1999, 40 international training courses have been held in Iran in joint cooperation with SIAP, most of which have been attended by employees of statistics sector from various ministries," he noted.

He attributed the lack of expertise in taking statistics by various executive organizations to production of contradictory statistics and presentation of statistics which are not up-to-date.

Navvabpour stated that one of the goals set by Iran's Statistics Research Center is to promote the statistical knowledge of the executive organizations by offering in-service training. He added, "As a consequence, in the long-run the lack of coordination in issuing statistics will be eliminated and we shall witness the mass production of more precise statistics."

A member of Shahid Beheshti University's Faculty and an instructor of statistics, Mohammadreza Meshkani, said that although statistics is a new science, it has made progress in Iran.

"Our current scientific and theoretical status in the domain of statistics is quite satisfactory, while we are still behind in practice," he added.

At the conclusion, he said, "Iran's Statistics Research Center can serve as a connecting bridge between the scientific centers and the executive organs to promote the knowledge of statistics.
