JAKARTA -- Floodwaters have claimed three victims in Indonesia's southern Sumatra Province of Bengkulu, with four others listed as missing and feared drowned, officials said Wednesday.

Two days of torrential rains made the Belimbing river overflow its banks, creating floodwaters that swept away or destroyed several houses and two mosques in Cinto Mandi village of Rejang Lebong district, 540 kilometers northwest of Jakarta, officials said.

The state-run Antara news agency quoted Umar Usman, deputy chief of Rejang Lebong district as saying that the flood, which occurred late Tuesday afternoon, also damaged at least five hectares of rice fields, DPA reported.

By Wednesday morning, the bodies of three villagers had been found, Usman said, adding that rescue workers, consisting of military and police officers, continued their search for four more people who were still missing and feared drowned.

Flooding was also affecting several other areas in Indonesia this week, including west and central Java provinces.

In central Java, several days of heavy flooding had inundated thousands of homes in the province's Cilacap district and surrounding areas, claiming the lives of two residents.
