WASHINGTON -- The official death toll among American troops fighting in the war on Iraq rose to 126 on Thursday, the Pentagon said as it identified one marine killed this week after being mistaken for an enemy soldier.

Out of the 126 dead soldiers -- one higher than the previous day -- 109 were killed in combat, the Pentagon said. The number of wounded U.S. troops held steady at 495 and three were still listed as missing, Reuters reported.

The Defense Department identified Cpl. Jason Mileo, 20, of Centreville, Maryland, as the marine who was mistaken for an enemy soldier and was shot and killed near Baghdad earlier in the week. Mileo was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division based in Twentynine Palms, California.
