Daily Lashes Out At Opportunists

TEHRAN -- The recent ban on the publication of the Persian daily Zan is currently being exploited for political and factional objectives by some veteran opportunists, wrote the Persian daily Jomhouri Eslami in a commentary yesterday. "A glance at the suspicious moves in recent days reveals the bitter fact that such measures are not congruous with reality, and that they are opportunistic attempts at malicious exploitation of the issue," it said.

The daily asked what objectives are behind holding demonstrations and gatherings in Tehran and a few other cities, where slogans such as ... should be executed' or .... should be fired' are chanted against the managing director of the Zan daily Faezeh Hashemi. It said, "The daily made a mistake and a revolutionary court banned its publication. The managing director should have understood the fact that choosing the daily for publishing a message by the ousted Shah's wife is due to satanic objectives." "At least, she could have compensated for the mistake by punishing the person responsible for publishing the message.

But, unfortunately she did not do so and also made the issue more complicated by making some remarks afterwards," it added. The commentary further said, "Although the measure taken by the revolutionary court faced protests from some who are after unbridled freedom, everyone is aware of the fact that such protests stem from opportunistic objectives." Bu associating the managing director of Zan to the Head of Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who is one of the pillars of the revolution, the enemies aim to undermine an organ which defends the Islamic Revolution and the Islamic Republic, it said.

It added, "This is the reason why the enemies chose this daily for running the message. They thought no one can object to a daily whose managing director is the daughter of Rafsanjani, and they thought they can continue to publish other messages as well." However, it said, despite the enemy's expectations, Rafsanjani not only approved of the court's ruling but also made it clear that nobody should be allowed to exploit the credit of the veteran revolutionaries to evade legal prosecution.

"Such moves -- holding demonstrations and gatherings in protest against the managing director of Zan daily -- will only benefit some opportunists and the elements hatching plots to undermine the pillars of the revolution," it said.
