TEHRAN – Italian police has returned to Iran a smuggled engraved gravestone, which dates from the 17th century.

The artifact was handed over to Iranian Ambassador Jahanbakhsh Mozaffari during a ceremony organized by the Carabinieri Art Squad on Monday, IRNA reported.

“We have good relations with the Italian police, especially in the field of discovering historic items and safeguarding cultural heritage,” Mozaffari said.

According to the Associated Press, a police statement mentioned the artifact was discovered abandoned near the Ferentino cemetery in August 2015.
