Robben red card ruins Mourinho century celebrations

BIRMINGHAM, England (AFP) -- Jose Mourinho celebrated his 100th game as Chelsea manager with a 2-1 victory against West Brom on Saturday, but the red card received by Arjen Robben put a dampener on the festivities.

Chelsea warmed up for their most important game of the season, against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night, with Mourinho's 72nd win since taking charge.

The success was marred however by the loss of Dutch international Robben, who is facing a three-match domestic suspension after his dismissal for violent conduct by referee Mark Halsey.

Robben's second red card in his last six games was the major flashpoint in a controversial encounter, which also saw Mourinho having to be restrained by police and stewards in the second half after a heated exchange with the Albion manager and former England captain Bryan Robson.

Mourinho and Robson clashed after Didier Drogba, scorer of Chelsea's first goal, fell theatrically after a challenge from Jonathan Greening.

The Portuguese coach appeared to mouth obscenities at the referee's assistant for failing to intervene and ensure that the Albion midfield player was also sent off.

He was clearly still angry over the way Halsey showed Robben a straight red card for a two-footed lunge at Greening minutes earlier as Chelsea collected their fourth sending-off in 11 games.

But even with ten men, Chelsea still had something in reserve. Joe Cole, who had been rested following his impressive display for England in the 2-1 friendly win over Uruguay in midweek, emerged from the substitutes bench midway through the second half to confirm victory with his ninth goal of the season and leave Albion in serious relegation trouble after another costly home defeat.

Robson's plan to frustrate Mourinho with a five-man midfield certainly worked for the opening 45 minutes, but six minutes into the second period, Drogba broke the deadlock with his eighth Premiership goal of the season, capitalizing on a mistake by Ronnie Wallwork to beat Neil Clement and fire a low shot past Polish goalkeeper Tomasz Kuczcsak.

Chelsea certainly missed the drive of Frank Lampard in midfield as the England international was forced to miss the game with a hamstring injury which prevented him from playing for England last Wednesday.

Lampard is still receiving treatment but is expected to be fit as Chelsea try to overturn their 2-1 deficit against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Cole will certainly be an important figure, which is why Mourinho decided to give him a well-earned break, but he needed only seven minutes to make an impact after replacing Damien Duff.

Another Wallwork mistake gifted the ball to Cole and he unselfishly set up Drogba. The striker's shot from close range was blocked, rebounding to the midfielder, who fired his shot between the legs of Paul Robinson to double Chelsea's lead.

Nigerian international Kanu was given the last 20 minutes by Robson to try to salvage something from the game and he gave Albion some hope four minutes from time with a close range finish from Robinson's cross -- but it was too late for Robson to ruin Mourinho's milestone day.
