Top shuttler Lee Chong Wei crashes out of Thailand Open

BANGKOK (AFP) -- World number one Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia crashed out of the Thailand Open late Wednesday after a tiebreak clash in the second round.

Lee, the Malaysian Open champion and top seed at this badminton tournament, lost to Chen Yu of China in an intense 59-minute battle, 21-19 14-21 21-19.

England's Andrew Smith was eliminated by Tan Chun Seang of Malaysia in another dramatic three-set match.

Local hero Boonsak Ponsana became the last Thai in the tournament when he beat Mohamed Nazree Latifi from Malaysia in straight sets.

His compatriot Poompat Sapkulchannarat lost to the tournament's third seed Peter Gade from Denmark.

Ninth seed Park Sung-Hwan from South Korea advanced to the next round after beating compatriot Kwang Jung Woon.

South Korea's Jung Hoon Min was the only qualifier to reach the third round after his victory over Vountus Indra Mawan from Malaysia.
