International calligraphy convention to be held in honor of Neyrizi

TEHRAN -- An international calligraphy convention in honor of Ahmad Neyrizi is to be hosted jointly by Tehran, Shiraz and Neyriz in September 2008, the director of Fars Research Foundation told the Persian service of ISNA today.
Zahed added that concurrently with the running of the convention, a mausoleum will be erected for the late Neyrizi in his home town of Neyriz, which is located in Fars province, and his statue will be erected in one of its streets which will subsequently be named after him.Zahed went on to say that exhibitions of calligraphy artworks will be held in Neyriz and Shiraz as sidelines of the event.
International Quranic calligraphers will be invited to participate in the convention and about 1000 editions of the Holy Quran written in the calligraphy of Neyrizi will be published to coincide with the event.
Ahmad Neyrizi was one of the best calligraphers of his era (18th century) whose work was in great demand. He was an expert in naskh calligraphy which gained popularity as an elegant script worthy of the Holy Quran.
The convention is to be cosponsored by the Iranian Academy of Arts and Iran’s Calligraphy Association
