TEHRAN -- An Italian team specializing in lighting design has been invited to bring sparkling nights back to the Karun River in Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province.

The team headed by Piero Castiglioni will work on designing luminaries and lighting systems alongside the Karun River and the five bridges over it, as well as the public parks in the city, said head of the Ahvaz Beautification Organization, Ahmadreza Sakebi.
Piero Castiglioni is a graduate in architecture in Milan where he lives and works, devoting most of his energies to lighting technology, designing luminaries and lighting systems for museums and for both public and private settings.
Historical monuments in St. Petersburg and several other European capitals have been designed by Castiglioni, Sakebi said.
“We signed an agreement with the Italian team several months ago when they visited the locations and planned their designs,” he added.
Sakebi remarked that although the Karun River faced an extreme drought in recent years, it still is one of the most scenic landscapes in the city.
This is an important event taking place in Ahvaz proving the fact that this city is being designed with modern lightning like other world-class modern cities, Sakebi said, adding that the project would be accomplished next year, expressing hope that several other locations will be studied for future lighting projects.
Karun is Iran’s most effluent and the only navigable river. It is 450 miles (720 km) long. It rises in the Zard Kuh Mountains of the Bakhtiari district in the Zagros range, receiving many tributaries, such as the Dez and the Kuhrang, before passing through the Ahvaz.
