Parents also must take responsibility for learning

March 8, 2011 - 0:0

The problem of low student achievement is not unions and teachers. While we can all point to a teacher in our past who should have picked a different career, almost all teachers work hard under difficult conditions to educate our children.

Every year, we discuss how teachers need to do their jobs better, but what we don't discuss is parental responsibility. The teacher only has a limited amount of time to cover each subject in the classroom, so teachers are just one half of the equation. The education of our children does not stop when the school bell rings. This is when the parents' responsibility begins.
Our children will not be successful if they are only met halfway. In most cases, the environment at home will determine how successful children will be in the classroom and life. You can't solve any problem without understanding its true causes.
