Burns retains world title

Ricky Burns retained his WBO super-featherweight title with a technical stoppage of Ghanaian Joseph Laryea in Glasgow.

The Scot was heavily favored by the bookmakers before the fight and although it was not an easy night for the champion, he was well on top when Laryea was pulled out after seven rounds with a hand injury.
Burns was unable to establish his jab in the early stages, the lanky Laryea throwing big sweeping bombs from all angles while the Scot looked to work the body at every opportunity.
He was clearly wary of the challenger's power as he sought a way past Laryea's flailing limbs and use of the head, and was not immediately able to establish a rhythm.
Laryea came out strongly in the fourth and managed to frustrate the champion by staying out of range, landing the better shots with his rangy jab.
