Larijani Replies Cabinet Criticism, Yunesi Asked to Boycott IRIB Program

TEHRAN Contrary to the reports, appeared in two Persian dailies, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Head Ali Larijani attended cabinet meeting on Wednesday. When asked to comment on the report appeared in Khordad and Emrooz an informed source talking to the TEHRAN TIMES said, It's wrong. Mr. Larijani attended weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The two dailies reported that the cabinet did not invite Larijani last week to attend its meeting.
When asked an informed source said, Yes, some cabinet ministers criticized Mr. Larijani for airing last week's debate on the recent murders on Channel No.1. Mr. Larijani explained and said that neither he nor the in charge of Channel No.1 was aware about the program aired on Monday last week, he said. Meanwhile according to another report, the President's Office asked Yunesi not to go to the IRIB for the program organized for clarification of the allegations made by a clergy during the Monday's debate last week.
The IRIB's Channel No.1 organizes a program titled Cheragh' or the lamp which airs on every day focussing on the current issues. Last week on Monday the TEHRAN TIMES Managing Director Abbas Salimi Namin attended the debate along with State Document Center Head Ruhollah Husseinian. The issue was the recent murders of dissident politicians and writers. Salimi advised that all should wait for the conclusion of an ongoing official inquiry before airing their views on the subject.
But Husseinian blamed that one of the supporters of President Seyed Mohammad Khatami was among the murderers. Controversy on the statement of Husseinian started in the print media in Iran. Some including the President's office also objected on the views voiced by Husseinian and also decided to file a sue against the IRIB in the court. The IRIB decided to organize another debate to clean the slate and invited Yunesi to express opinion on the issue.
Yunesi is a presiding judge of the three-person inquiry committee appointed by Khatami along with the officials from the Interior Ministry and Information Ministry for detecting the facts about the murders of the politicians and writers. An informed source told the TEHRAN TIMES that President's Office advised Yunesi not to attend the debate organized for the clarification' of what Husseinian said.
