MIDDLESBROUGH, England Croatian international striker Alen Boksic completed a 2.5 million pound ($3.75 million) transfer from Lazio to Middlesbrough on Monday.
Boksic, 30, has been granted a work permit and will make his Premier League debut on August 19 when Middlesbrough travel to Coventry City.
Reports in the English press suggested that Boksic would become the highest-paid player in British football on 63,000 pounds ($95,000) a week.
But Bryan Robson, the Middlesbrough manager, said: "Boksic is one of the best strikers in Europe, but to say that we are paying him 63,000 pounds a week is nonsense." Steve Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, added: "I don't know where people get such a figure from." Boksic is the sixth player to arrive at the Riverside Stadium in recent weeks. The list includes former Real Madrid star Christian Karembeu, Cameroon international Joseph Desire Job and Noel Whelan, a striker from Coventry City.
