Spanish Composer Xavier Montsalvatge Dies Aged 90
Montsalvatge died peacefully after having been confined to his bed for several days.
Considered one of the most representative, contemporary Catalan composers, Montsalvatge wrote more than 100 works. They covered a wide spectrum of musical genres ranging from symphony to opera and from ballet to cinema.
Born in the eastern city of Gerona, Montsalvatge started his musical training at an early age in Barcelona.
Apart from his work as a composer, Montsalvatge wrote music criticism for several publications and taught composing at a Barcelona conservatory.
His artistic work earned him several distinctions, including an honorary doctorate from Barcelona University, membership in several cultural academies and the Catalan honorary music prize.
