Afghan Red Crescent Society Calls For Iran's Urgent Relief Aid
Izadyar told IRNA that the conditions of many Afghans under the protection and relief of ARCS were pathetic and his agency were unable to meet their urgent demands.
"Unfortunately, the relief aid extended by some of the littoral Arab states of the Persian Gulf has been diminishing ever since the collapse of Taleban regime," he added.
Despite a remarkable boost in relief aid provided by other countries including Iran, there is need for more supplies, he said.
Izadyar said several years of war and internal strife in Afghanistan had left up to 800,000 widowed and helpless, five million migrants, 1.5 million martyrs, two million disabled and one million orphans.
"Afghanistan Red Crescent Society can only afford to extend relief to 2,500 individuals," he said.
"In view of cultural, ethnic and historical commonalties of the two neighboring countries, Iran has a better understanding of the current difficulties in the Afghan community," he noted.
"This has become crystal clear to all Afghan relief-seekers for quite a while," Izadyar added.
For instance, 2,000 tons of foodstuff were recently provided for the needy Afghans by Imam Khomeini Relief Committee, while Pakistan's relief supplies hardly reached 300 tons, he said.
Other foreign institutes operating under the name of relief organizations in Afghanistan did not make any assistance to relief-seekers, Izadyar said as he expressed his surprise.
"It is not clear why they do not help relief-seekers who are supposedly under their cover," he said.
"Almost every day, a great number of Afghan relief-seekers arriving in Kabul from various provinces across the nation gather in front of ACRS buildings for relief aid, but unfortunately we cannot afford to help them all," Izadyar said.
