DHAKA Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has been awarded the prestigious Ceres medal by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) for her fight against hunger, officials said Tuesday. The award comes after Sheikh Hasina was awarded the UNESCO peace prize for her efforts to end a two-decade insurgency in the southeastern Bangladesh Hill Tracts. She also won the Pearl S. Buck award from the U.S.-based Randolph-Macon Women's College for her achievements in political, economic and humanitarian fields last month.
The FAO award is awarded to women who play a prominent role in resolving the problems linked to increasing food production, the official BSS news agency said. (AFP)
