Argentina Jews: Blaming Iran Convenient for Government
May 23, 1998 - 0:0
LONDON Leading members of Argentina's Jewish community are reported to have expressed dissatisfaction with charging Iran with complicity in the two still-unresolved Buenos Aires bombing attacks in 1992 and 1994. They were quoted by the London Jewish Chronicle as saying, Blaming Iran would divert attention away from the activities of far- right police squads, whom some still blame for the attacks.
Laura Ginsberg of the Memoria Activa Group, which represents relatives of the bombing victims, said that blaming it all on Iran was very convenient for the government. President Menem wants to close the case and not investigate any local connections, she said, adding that such an investigation would really bother the government as it would have to look into the activities of right-wing police squads.
A former top police officer and 10 other officers were originally arrested in 1996, but were later released amid claims of official anti-semitism from local and other overseas Jewish leaders. Last Friday, there were fresh claims of new, conclusive evidence linking Iran to the attacks on the Israeli Embassy and the main Jewish community center, leading Argentina to recall all but one of its diplomats in Tehran.
