25 U.S. soldiers killed in western Iraq
In a statement, the U.S. military said four soldiers and a Marine were killed in the violent Anbar province while another soldier died northeast of Baghdad in a roadside bomb attack.
All the deaths occurred on Saturday. The military had earlier reported the deaths of 19 other service members across Iraq on Saturday, including 12 killed in a helicopter crash northeast of Baghdad.
"Four soldiers and one marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died Saturday from wounds sustained due to enemy action while operating in Al-Anbar province," Sunday's military statement said.
The bloodiest day for U.S. troops since the invasion began was on January 26, 2005, when 36 U.S. service members died -- 31 in a helicopter crash and six others in separate attacks.
The latest fatalities bring the military's losses in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,050, according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures.
