TEHRAN -- Expediency Council Strategic Research Center Director Hassan Rohani has said that forming a national unity government will be very difficult and complex.
“There has been some sort of coalition between Iran’s two main factions at some points in time, but forming a national unity government or a coalition cabinet is difficult and complex,” Rohani said on Sunday at the 20-year Outlook Plan, Ideal to Reality conference, which was held at Rasht’s Gilan University. As Iran’s presidential election approaches, many political figures have called for the formation of a national unity government.
Rohani said, “From an idealistic point of view, forming a national unity government to run the country would be logical and positive, since a single faction can not administer the country well.”
He went on to say that the winner of the 2009 presidential election should not try to isolate other factions.
Meanwhile, Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani stated on Monday that all campaigns in the upcoming election should have the goal of promoting national unity.
And the platforms drafted by politicians and factions in the run-up to the election should promote national unity, otherwise they will not be deemed acceptable, Rafsanjani told the Mehr News Agency correspondent in Sari, Mazandaran Province.
He also stated that strengthening national cohesion should be the aim of all the plans calling for a national unity government or national coalition government
