Yunesi Introduced to Majlis as Information Minister

TEHRAN President Mohammad Khatami Wednesday introduced Ali Younesi as new Minister of Information to the Majlis for a vote of confidence. Yunesi, 43, is currently head of the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Vice-President for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Ali Sadouqi handed over President Khatami's letter to Majlis Speaker Ali Akbar Nateq Nouri at the Majlis yesterday.
Former Information Minister Qorbanali Dori-Najafabadi resigned after it was disclosed recently that some Information Ministry staff were involved in the killings of some writers and opposition leaders over the past year. Khatami accepted Dori-Najafabadi's resignation on February 9. Hojjatoleslam Yunesi was born in the city of Nahavand, in western province of Hamedan, in 1955. After completing his elementary school, he studied religious sciences at Nahavand theologian school.
After 1.5 years, he left home for the holy city of Qom where he began his studies at the Qom seminary. At the same time he continued his academic studies and in 1981 he received his master's degree in educational sciences from the University of Judicial and Educational Sciences. Yunesi also received his Master's Degree in Political Sciences in 1997. Yunesi was a political activist before and during the victory of 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. Due to his anti-Shah activities, the young Yunesi who was sued by the Shah's Intelligence Service (SAVAK), was forced to leave the country in 1975.
He joined the Palestinian and Lebanese guerrillas and became familiar with military and guerrilla operations under the command of martyr Mohammad Montazeri. During the public uprising against the Shah's regime in 1978, he was arrested by SAVAK in Nahavand and after being severely tortured he was transferred to Hamedan. Hojj. Yunesi has held various positions since the victory of the Islamic Revolution including Head of Tehran's Branch of the Revolutionary Court, Head of Second Branch of Army's Revolutionary Court, Head of Army Revolutionary Court, Public Prosecutor of Tehran for four years (1988-91), and Head of the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces. Over the past few months, Yunesi has been heading the Special Inquiry Committee set up to follow up the recent suspected killings, in coordination with President Mohammad Khatami and Head of the Judiciary Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi and with approval of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
