Dispute over Iran’s nuclear program is illegal: Larijani

MUNICH - Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani stated on Friday that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program is devoid of legality and “other lines of thought are the source of adventurism.”

“After long talks, I understood that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear issue is by no means legal,” the former nuclear negotiator told participants at the 45th Munich Conference on Security Policy.
He asked how it is acceptable that Israel, with a meager population, is allowed to have more than 200 nuclear warheads, but the Muslim world, with a population of 1.5 billion, is deprived of its right to use nuclear technology for producing electricity and other peaceful uses.
-----Nuclear disarmament
He went on to say that all calls for nuclear disarmament in the world have been futile.
“The world no longer wants to hear recommendations; it wants to see the nuclear disarmament of certain great powers.”
He said Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons and that nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s defense doctrine.
“We hate (the idea of) living under the cover of weapons of mass destruction.”
He said that even after 20 years, a number of Iranian citizens are still suffering due to injuries by chemical weapons, which were used against Iran by Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war with the support of certain Western countries.
“I state very clearly that Iran considers the production and use of any nuclear weapons to be a violation of the tenets of Islam.”
He said Iran was able to develop nuclear technology in compliance with the terms of the International Atomic Energy Agency Statute and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The former nuclear negotiator stated that he is fully aware of all the processes of Iran’s nuclear talks, adding that after “long talks, I understood that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear issue is by no means legal, but other lines of thought are the source of adventurism.”
--------Hamas is an elected government
He also rejected the Western accusation that Hamas is a terrorist group.
“By calling Hamas terrorist, the reality will not change.”
Hamas was elected through a direct vote of the people under international supervision, but it faced an illogical response from certain Western countries.
The Majlis speaker also said insulting Hezbollah will not change reality. He added that Hezbollah is an important constituent of the Lebanese administration and is rooted in the “hearts” of the people of Lebanon and the region.
He also said certain media outlets are trying to turn the people of the West against Islam and Muslims by presenting a “violent and warmongering” image of Islam and Muslims
