Reformist will contest election with single candidate: ex-MP
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN -- Yadollah Eslami, the secretary general of Former Lawmakers’ Association, stated on Sunday that reformists will “definitely” contest the presidential race with a single candidate.

“The Reform camp will reach consensus on a single candidate in the election,” Eslami told the Mehr News Agency.

Currently, the reformist front has entered the presidential race with two candidates: Mohammad Khatami and Mahdi Karroubi. But there is some news that former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi will announce candidacy till the end of the week.

He said reformists are contesting the election and declaring their viewpoints on the country’s situation because they believe the situation is not desired and that is why former prime minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi has broken his silence after twenty years.

The former MP noted that the association’s strategy is to nominate a “single candidate” and present “single program”, and acting in the “framework of reforms”.

He added that the reformists’ approach is to improve the country’s situation and that the association will support a candidate who enjoys more support among the public.

Asked about which candidate will be supported more in reformist camp if Mousavi runs in the election and Khatami also does not drop out the race, Eslami said reformists are more concerned about “national interests” rather than individuals.

Iran’s presidential election will be held on June 12
