Obama expresses interest to meet Khatami in Istanbul: source
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN – U.S. President Barack Obama has expressed his willingness to meet with Iran’s former president Mohammad Khatami on the sidelines of Alliance for Civilizations summit in Istanbul which opens (Monday) today, an informed source close to Khatami told the Mehr News Agency on Sunday.

It is “highly likely” that on the second day of the summit there is a short conversation between Khatami and Obama, the source told MNA on condition of anonymity.

The second Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, which is scheduled for 6-7 April in Istanbul, promises to be the world’s premier event aimed at promoting intercultural understanding.

Although Khatami does not have any plan to meet Obama in Turkey, on the second day of the summit both of them will attend a meeting and it is highly likely that there will be a conversation between them, he added.

He pointed out that if there is a short encounter between Khatami and Obama, they “will not talk about political issues” since Khatami does not hold an official position.

Speculations about a meeting between the U.S. president and the Iranian cultural figure in Istanbul come as Turkey has announced its readiness to mediate in possible Tehran-Washington talks
