Erdogan’s visit will help expand bilateral ties: MP

TEHRAN -– Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi stated that the visit of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iran is a symbol of the determination of the two countries to expand bilateral ties.

“Erdogan’s trip to Tehran is a good opportunity for the expansion of cooperation between Iran and Turkey,” he told the Mehr News Agency on Sunday.

Boroujerdi added, “Iran and Turkey have had growing relations for decades.”

Iran and Turkey have the experience of cooperation in different areas including regional and international issues under the frameworks of the Organization of Islamic Conference, Non-Aligned Movement, and the Economic Cooperation Organization, the MP noted.

“As two neighboring states, Iran and Turkey have also had widespread cooperation in aiding Iraq,” he said.

The MP pointed out that the Majlis is also pursuing the strengthening of ties with Ankara.

Erdogan was to arrive at Iran at the head of a delegation which is composed of 200 high-ranking political and economic officials.

Turkey’s prime minister will have meetings with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, First Vice President Mohammadreza Rahimi, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, and Foreign Minter Manouchehr Mottaki during his two-day stay in the Islamic Republic.

The meetings will focus on a variety of regional and international issues such as energy deals, nuclear programs, and the expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Ankara.
