130,000 Iranians become drug addicts each year: police chief
Tehran Times Social Desk

TEHRAN — National Police Chief Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam has said that each year around 130,000 Iranian become drug addicts in the country.

Talking on the sidelines of the first experts meeting of Drug Control Headquarters, Ahmadi-Moqaddam said “such statistics are not accurate and are only based on our estimates.”

The top drug control official further said that determining the accurate number of addicts in the country has always been a controversial issue.

The figures presented by the Drug Control Headquarters might not be accurate but they are reliable, the police chief stated.

Based on the latest UN report, around 930,000 people in Iran consume heroin and opium while 5 percent consume other kinds of narcotics, bringing the total number of drug addicts to 1 million, Ahmadi-Moqaddam pointed out.

Iran is the main victim of opium production in neighboring Afghanistan.
