TEHRAN — Surgeons at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences performed the second successful fetal surgery, which was unprecedented in other regional countries.

The surgery was carried out in the Ghadir Mother and Child Hospital, the IRNA news agency reported.
Fetal surgery is a highly complex surgical intervention to repair birth defects in the womb that requires the most expert care for both mother and unborn baby.

Doctor Hamid Amozegar, a member of the operation team, stated that the operation was conducted on a fetus diagnosed with a heart defect. Hadn’t we performed the surgery on the fetus the kid would have suffered from a severe heart condition for the rest of his or her life, Amozegar added.

“Now the kid will have a normal life after the birth,” he added.

“The first fetal surgery was performed in 2012 in Ghadir Mother and Child Hospital and the kid is now three years old living a healthy life and we are pretty sure about the kid’s health through the periodic exams,” he said.

The fetal research center in Shiraz is now up and running for four years, he noted, adding that fetuses are diagnosed and receive proper treatments for heart, brain, kidney, and lung defects.
